Raddenstiles Veterinary Surgery is delighted to be the first veterinary practice in Exmouth to provide laparoscopic surgery for our patients.
What is laparoscopic surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery is what we commonly know as keyhole surgery. In veterinary practice it is usually, but not exclusively, used for bitch spays. Rather than accessing the abdominal cavity via an incision, or access to in this case, the ovaries is made via three small punctures through the skin. One is for the camera and the other two are for the instruments to carry out the procedure.
What are the benefits?
- The wounds are smaller so do not cause such significant damage.
- Manipulation of the ovaries is minimal meaning discomfort is greatly reduced.
- There there is less trauma.
- Recovery time is significantly shorter.
What are the costs?
As with all surgery, costs do vary. As the procedure requires an extra nurse in attendance and the equipment cost is significant there is charge of £180 above what a standard incision spay would cost.
Other applications
Laparoscopic surgery may also be used to treat retained testicles in dogs and for minimally invasive biopsy of abdominal organs such as the liver.
What if I am not a Raddenstiles client?
We are happy to offer this surgery to non-Raddenstiles clients from Exmouth and the greater East Devon region. Simply ask your current vet to refer your pet to us for laparoscopic surgery or contact our reception team and we will make the necessary arrangements. There is no need to change practices and any after care can be done by your usual practice.
